PROJECT NARRATIVE

Remote Craft: Building with Precision and Purpose

At ONOMA Architecture, we believe that constraints are not limitations—they are opportunities for invention. Designing cost-conscious custom homes on remote sites has challenged us to rethink traditional construction methods and embrace a more agile, systems-based approach.

In these landscapes—where access is limited and labor can be scarce—we’ve turned to prefabrication not as a compromise, but as a craft. By integrating mass timber components and working from a curated kit of parts, we’re able to deliver high-quality, bespoke architecture while simplifying the construction process. This approach allows us to maintain the richness and specificity of custom design, while reducing on-site complexity and construction timelines.

Each project begins with a deep understanding of place. From there, we develop a modular framework that responds to the site’s unique conditions—topography, climate, orientation—while remaining adaptable to fabrication and transport constraints. Our in-house technology plays a critical role in this process: we meticulously document and coordinate every building component, ensuring seamless communication between design and fabrication teams.

This digital-to-physical workflow allows us to collaborate closely with local fabricators, translating architectural intent into precisely crafted elements that arrive on site ready to assemble. The result is a home that feels rooted and refined—an architecture that is both efficient and expressive.

For ONOMA, this is not just a method—it’s a philosophy. One that values clarity over complexity, and sees innovation as a means to deepen our connection to place, material, and craft.
